Mail and More employee saves AIR21 shipments from fire!
Who would have ever thought that someone would be willing to risk their life for a shipment?
Amorsolo Santos, a logistics specialist of Mail and More was at the said company’s branch at Convergys building when he saw black smoke from a nearby area. A volunteer fire fighter from Central Tondo, Amorsolo or Amor went to the area to speculate. To his surprise he saw the Campos Rueda building that houses another Mail and More outlet in danger of catching fire.
Saving the shipments
“When I arrived I saw Raymond, the assigned agent there outside the outlet. His eyes were already teary and he was having difficulty breathing because of the smoke. Then I told him, we need to get the shipments out of there.” Amor explained in Filipino.
Despite the risk of endangering their lives, Amor together with Raymond Mariñas went inside the smoke filled Mail and More outlet and started getting the shipments out of the room.
“Those were just small pouches but I said, those shipments are important no matter how big or small these are. People who trusted these things with us are confident that we will deliver these on time.” Amor said.
At that time the FedEx van came, and Amor was sure that the shipments were secured. But then, the building was still blazing.
Outlet in danger
Seeing that the outlet may be burned in a matter of minutes, Amor who then called his fellow fire fighters in Tondo to help put out the fire, went up the building and started extinguishing the fire at the upper floors. The Mail and More outlet is located on the first floor of the building. Amor knew that if the floors of the second floor were saved from the fire, then the Mail and More outlet would only suffer minor damages.
True enough moments after, the fire fighters announced fire out. Raymond and Amor went back inside the outlet to get the remaining things.
Passion to help
“I’m happy when I help people. That’s why I really take time to attend trainings. I even take weekends even my leave benefits to train.” Amor added. Amor wanted to be a police but he chose to be a fire fighter instead. He attended Basic Life support trainings at Red Cross and at the Heart Center as well as at Camp Aguinaldo. He recently helped a motorist who suffered injuries in an accident near the Manila International Airport. “His head was terribly hit and his mouth was full of blood, but I said I don’t care even if he was a man so I performed CPR on him. I thought he was gone but I found out he was still alive.”
Amor believes that it is important to have basic knowledge on emergency procedures. “At work, we just can’t think of ourselves in case of emergency, it’s also our responsibility to take care of others as well.” Amor explains.
